Question

This paper is about the "Global epistasis makes adaptation predictable despite sequence-level stochasticity" and the link for this study is given below:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4314286/

can you please help me these questions because i'm having a hard time understanding the paper:

questions:

3) How do the authors support their hypothesis?

4) Do you believe the author’s data presented in the paper (and any supplements) support their hypothesis. If not, why not?

5) Are there other experiments or experimental modification that should have been performed by the researchers?

Explanation / Answer

Research has shown that different starting mutations have tended to end up with similar overall effect on the organism. Epistatic interactions between mutations can make evolution contingent with the chance occurrence of initial mutations.

3. The authors supported their hypothesis by citing the experimental data from experiments performed on S. cerevisiae. Beneficial mutations have consistently smaller effects on fitter backgrounds. The results showed that beneficial mutations affecting a variety of biological processes are globally coupled and they interact strongly but only through their combined effect on ftness. So, they said that as a consequence, ftness evolution follows a predictable trajectory even though sequence-level adaptation is stochastic.
