Question
Compare the images of seven day-old wild-type and rml mutant Arabidopsis seedlings presented in Figure 1. Briefly summarize the MAJOR morphological difference(s) between the wild type andrml mutant in which the RML gene product is non-functional. Include in your analysis the development of plant organs that are essentially unaffected by the mutation.
Figure 1. Morphology of seven day-old wild-type (A) and rml mutant (B) seedlings showing the cotyledons, hypocotyl and root Bar = 0.5 mm for A: 0.4 mm for B.
Cotyledons Cotyledons Seed Seed 8Explanation / Answer
Rml stands for root meristemless and the major changes include only in the root development.
In plants root and shoots are developed from mreistematic cell continouscon through it's life cycle
In case of wild type all meristematic cells divide normally and cell proliferation will take place normally so root and shoot lenght is normal. Due to production of functional protein by the gene product. Whereas in case of rml mutant the gene product is non functional so the embryonic roots produced from the cotyledons may be arrested at intial stages or they may be very smaller in length So which may caudcdeath of plant or unrelated dormancy
Main rml gene is involved in regulating the cell division in root meristematic tissue
