Question

17) On a separate sheet of paper, answer the following ques- tions as assigned by your instructor: 1. What are the end products of anaerobic and aerobic respiration pathways? How do those end products compare in energy content and cellular toxicity? 2. How did anaerobic and aerobic yeast cultures differ in rates of CO2 and ethanol production? Do aerobic yeast produce some ethanol and if so, why? 3. Turn in your graph of the data in table 7.3 with this summary. What conclusions about the effect of cold treatment on your study species can you draw from that graph 4. What are the advantages of aerobic respiration over anaerobic respiration? What are the advantages of anaerobic respiration over aerobic?

Explanation / Answer

1) End products of aerobic respiration are 38 atp of enegy ,carbon dioxide and water while in anaerobic end products are ethanal and 2 atp.

In aerobic respiration as there are 38 atp of energy and in anaerobic respiration 2 atp of energy are produced .

In aerobic respiration there is far more oxygen produced so there are more chances of oxygen toxicity but in anaerobic respiration there are not more atp produced so there are less chances of cellular toxicity as compared to aerobic respiration

2) In anaerobic respiration of yeast culture

Glucose - ethanol + carbon dioxide

C6H12O6 -- 2C2H5OH +2CO2

Therefore in this 2 ethanols are produced and 2 carbon dioxide molecules are produced

In aerobic respiration in yeast it is water and carbon dioxide which is produced , aerobic fermentation is rarely observed there are only few yeasts in which fermentation is observed .

Yes in few yeasts produce ethanol i.e aerobic fermentation happens like in saccharomyces fermentation happens when there is low amount of glucose source or most carbhohydrate source .

3) requires table as mentioned but nt available here

4) Advantages of aerobic over anaerobic

*In aerobic respiration far more atp's are produced

*Aerobic organisms have evolved a few necessary materials namely enzymes and antioxidants to protect themselves.

*Oxidation of glycogen and fatty acids dont produce any fatiguing by products.

* Body has large stores for muscle glycogen and triglycerides so exercise can last for several hours.

Advantages of anaerobic respiration

* Advantage is that muscle can make atp without oxygen

* In anaerobic respiration atp formation is very fast

*Less energy requirement as no aeration is needed

* Energy generation is in form of methane gas
