Question
The Penguin, arch-nemesis of Batman, is riding his bike, headed straight toward the caped crusader. Penguin is travelling to the right at vPeng= 14.0 m/s. Batman is running to the left at vBat = - 12.0 m/s. They are about to crash and stick together. (Take right-ward velocities to have a positive value, i.e., 3.00 m/s is to the right, and -2.00 m/s is to the left.)
Use this information to answer the following:
mBat = 120. kg, the mass of Batman
mPeng = 70.0 kg, the mass of Penguin and his bike
What are the values of the initial momentum of Batman and Penguin?
pBat = ____kg-m/
pPeng = ___kg-m/s
(B) What is the total momentum of the Batman-Penguin system?
pTotal = ____kg-m/s
(C) What is the final velocity of the two characters after they have crashed and stuck together?
vFinal = _____ /s
(D) If Penguin were going faster, then he could stop Batman, and their final velocity would be zero. How fast would Penguin need to be going in order to for this to happen?
vStop = ____ m/s

Explanation / Answer
A) momentum=mass*velocity
pBat= 120*(-12)=-1440 kgm/s
pPeng=70*14=980 kg m/s
B)ptotal= -1440+980=-460 kg m/s
C) Apply conservation of mementum
M*v= -460 ; v- velocity along right of the combined system; M=70+120=190 kg
So, v=-2.421 ms-1
D) For that total momentum of the system should be zero.
120*(-12)+70*V=0;
V=20.571 ms-1
