Question

Calculate the energy required to make the shown glucose gradient across the plasma membrane of DKO intestinal cells. Consider inward movement.

Based on your calculations, is there enough energy in the Na+ gradient to concentrate glucose 3-fold across the plasma membrane in DKO cells? Assume one Na+ and one glucose are transported by the symporter.

What do the thermodynamics that you have just calculated tell us about glucose transport in DKO mice?

-706 cal/mol DKO cell glucose 6.6 mM glucose 2 mM

Explanation / Answer

1)The energy required to make the shown glucose gradient across the plasma membrane of DKO intestinal cells=>Vm X( glucose internal - glucose external)=-60X(6.6-2)=>-706 cal/mol

2)No there is not enough energy in the Na+ gradient to concentrate glucose 3-fold across the plasma membrane in DKO cells because the energy is negative and in order to concentrate 3-fold across the plasma we need positive energy to penetrate the cell membrane.

3)The glucose gradient cannot energize sufficient Na+ transport because the energy due to glucose is negative which ccannot energize the transport of sodium ions because they require positive energy in order to energize which is not present in this case.
