Question

An Air Force plane is doing a bombing run in the desert at an altitude=400 meters. The pilot knows he must drop the bomb a horizontal distance =1000 meters before the target in order to hit the target. The plane is flying at a constant, horizontal speed. ( Assume the house is at zero elevation, which it will be after the bomb hits it!)

a) How much time does it take for the bomb to hit the ground after it is dropped?

b) What must the speed of the plane be for the bomb to hit the target?

c) Where is the plane relative to the bomb when it hits the house? (Be specific please)

Explanation / Answer

a. height = 400 m

h= 1/2gt^2

so, t= sqrt( 2h/g)= 9.03 s

b. speed = distance/time= 1000/9.03= 110.74 m/s

c. just 400 m above the house
