Question

Q: For the following, enter your answers to at least three significant figures. A group of students performed an experiment using the same setup as the one used in the Waves on Strings lab. The sample data is provided in the table below.

A) Copy this data into GA and use it to make a frequency vs. number of antinodes graph. Determine the speed of the wave in the string. (Assume the distance between the end supports of the string is 0.31 m.)

_______ m/s

B) If the linear density of the spring equals 0.0028 kg/m and applied tension was 2.2 N, what is the theoretical wave speed?

_______m/s

Explanation / Answer

For a string,
v = (lambda)f
and for number of antinodes, n
lambda = 2*L/n

so v = 2Lf/n
f/n = v/2L

From the Graph, f/n = 42.60
v = 2L*42.60 = 26.412 m/s

Theoretically
v = sqroot(T/mu) = sqroot(2.2/0.0028) = 28.03059 m/s
