Ans:

a) 1.22e-4 C

b) 39.32 m/s

c) 3540 N/m

Two point charges, each of charge +Q, are held a distance 33 cm apart on a frictionless horizontal surface. One of the charges, with mass m = 140g, is let go and accelerates away from the other charge which is held in place. The speed of the moving charge after it moves 1.7 m from its original position is 70 m/s. Find the charge Q. Find the speed of the moving charge when it is 45 cm away from the stationary charge. In a separate experiment, when the moving charge is 45 cm away from the stationary charge (starting position still 33 cm), the moving charge collides with a horizontal spring of spring constant k. The spring gets compressed by a distance of 37 cm before the charged mass comes to a momentary stop. Find the spring constant k.

Explanation / Answer

a) conserving energy

kQ2/0.33 = 0.5 x 0.14 x (70)2 + kQ2/2.03 ( k = 9 x 109)

Q = 1.2255 x 10-4 C

b) kQ2/0.33 = 0.5 x 0.14 x v2 + kQ2/0.45

v = 39.5 m/s

c)   kQ2/0.33 =  kQ2/0.82 + 0.5 x k x (0.37)2

    k = 3575.72 N/m
