Question

A particle of ionizing radiation creates 6500 ion pairs in the gas inside a Geiger tube as it passes through.

A) What is the minimum energy, in joules, that was deposited if 30.0 eV is required to create each ion pair?

B) If all of this energy is converted to thermal energy in the gas, what is its temperature increase in degrees Celsius, assuming it consists of 50.0 cm3 of monatomic ideal gas at 0.250-atm pressure? You may assume the temperature change is small and the gas is at 20° C.

A) 6500*30 * 1.602677 * 10^-19 = 3.12522015*10^-14 j

B)???

Explanation / Answer

B) using universal gas equation we have

PV = nRT

0.25*50 = n*0.0821*(273+20)

n = 0.5196

Q = nCv*dT

3.125*10^-14 = 0.5196*3*8.314/2 * dT

dT = 4.822*10^-15 degree celcius
