Question

A uniform, 240-N rod that is 2.00 m long carries a 225-N weight at its right end and an unknown weight W toward the left end (see the figure (Figure 1)). When W is placed 43.7 cm from the left end of the rod, the system just balances horizontally when the fulcrum is located 81.2 cm from the right end. Part A Find W. Part B If W is now moved 23.9 cm to the right, how far must the fulcrum be moved to restore balance? Part C If W is now moved 23.9 cm to the right, in what direction must the fulcrum be moved to restore balance? to the left to the right

Explanation / Answer

(a) Force balance

225 + W + 240 = N

Moment balance

From left end

W*43.7 + 240* 100 - N*(200- 81.2) +225*200 = 0

N = 648.19

W = 183.19

Now for part 2

183.19* (43.7 + 23.9)+240 * 100 - 648.19( 200-81.2 +x) +225*200 = 0

x = 6.755 cm

Fulcrum moved to rigth side
