Consider the pendulum shown above. A spherical mass M = 11.0 kg attached to a string starts at rest with the string horizontal as shown in the top diagram. The mass is released and swings down as shown in the bottom diagram. However, the string will break if the tension is equal or greater than 165 N. At what angle , as shown in the diagram, will the string break? Give your answer in degrees to at least three significant digits. Your answer will not be counted wrong for more than three significant digits, this is just to avoid rounding errors.

Applying Newton’s second law along x axis,

Ty = mg

Tcos = mg

T=mg/cos

=cos^-1(mg/T)

When T= 165 N

= cos^-1[(11.0*9.8)/165] = 49.21 deg
