Question
Two parallel wires separated by a distance r = 2.5 m have current in the same direction as shown below. I_1 = 5.5 A and I_2 = 4.0 A. What is the direction of the magnetic field due to I_1 at a point half way between the wires? What is the direction of the magnetic field due to I_2 at a point half way between the wires? What is the magnitude of the net magnetic field at a point 0.5 meters below the wire with current I_1? What is the direction of the net magnetic field at the point in part c? Where is the net magnetic field zero?Explanation / Answer
a) The direction of field is downward.
b) The direction of field is upward.
c) B = uo*I1/(2pi*r1) - uo*I2/(2pi*r2) = (2*10^-7)[(5.5/0.5) – (4.0/2.0)] = 1.8 uT
d) Downward.
e) uo*I1/(2pi*r1) = uo*I2/(2pi*(2.5 – r1)) ============> 5.5/r1 = 4.0/(2.5 – r1)
4.0r1 = 13.75 – 5.5r1
r1 = 1.45 m (below the wire of current I1)
