Question
A uniform electric field exists in the region between two oppositely charged plane parallel plates. A proton is released from rest at the surface of the positively charged plate and strikes the surface of the opposite plate, 1.60 cm distant from the first, in a time interval of 2.60 times 10^-6 s. Part A Find the magnitude of the electric field. Express your answer with the appropriate units. Part B Find the speed of the proton when it strikes the negatively charged plate. Express your answer with appropriate units.Explanation / Answer
Part A) Here, acceleration of proton = 2 * 0.0160/(2.60 * 10-6)2
= 4.733 * 109 m/sec2
=> qE = ma
=> magnitude of electric field = (1.67 * 10-27 * 4.733 * 109)/(1.6 * 10-19)
= 49.4 N/C
Part B) speed of proton = 4.733 * 109 * 2.60 * 10-6
= 12305.8 m/sec
