Question
Suppose you want to determine the electric field in a certain region of space. You have a small object of known charge and an instrument that measures the magnitude and direction of the force exerted on the object by the electric field.
(a) The object has a charge of +35.0 ?C and the instrument indicates that the electric force exerted on it is 45.0 ?N, due east. What are the magnitude and direction of the electric field?
(b) What are the magnitude and direction of the electric field if the object has a charge of -15.0 ?C and the instrument indicates that the force is 40.0 ?N, due west?
Explanation / Answer
here,
a)
charge , q = 35 * 10^-6 C
let the electric feild be E
the electric force , F = q * E
45 * 10^-6 = 35 * 10^-6 * E
E = 1.29 N/C
as the charge is positive the direction of electric feild is same as electric force
so, the electric feild is 1.29 N/C towards east
b)
charge , q = - 15 * 10^-6 C
let the electric feild be E
the electric force , F = q * E
40 * 10^-6 = 15 * 10^-6 * E
E = 2.67 N/C
as the charge is negative the direction of electric feild is opposite to the direction of electric force
so, the electric feild is 2.67 N/C towards east
