Question
A volumetric flask made of Pyrex is calibrated at 20.0 degree C. It is filled to the 305-mL mark with 42.0 degree C acetone. After the flask is filled, the acetone cools and the flask warms so that the combination of acetone and flask reaches a uniform temperature of 32.0 degree C. The combination is then cooled back to 20.0 degree C. (The average volume expansion coefficient of acetone is 1.50 times l0^-4(degree C)^_1.) What is the volume of the acetone when it cools to 20.0 degree C? At the temperature of 32.0 degree C, does the level of acetone lie above or below the 305-mL mark on the flask? Explain.Explanation / Answer
Given
initially Pyrex temperature is 20 0C,
acetone of volume 302 ml, at 42 0C
lates cools down so that the flask reaches temperature of 32 0C, still cooled so that both having the common temperature o f 20 0C
and also given that coefficient of volume expansion of acetone is gamma g = 1.50*10^-4 / 0C
a) from the definition of coefficient of volume expansion g = DV/(V*DT)
where DV is change in volume , DT is change in temperature
now DV = g*V*DT= 1.5*10^-4*305*22 = 1.0065 ml
the volume of the acetone is 305 -1.0065 ml = 303.9935 ml
b)
as the acetone looses heat energy and the volume gets decreases so the level of acetone at 20 0C is less than at 42 0C
