Question

Chapter 27, Problem 028 Z Your answer is partially correct. Try again The ideal battery in Figure (a) has emf 8.9 V. Plot 1 in Figure (b) gives the electric potential difference V that can appear across resistor 1 of the circuit versus the current i in that resistor. The scale of the V axis is set by Vs 18.9 V, and the scale of the i axis is set by is 3.14 mA. Plots 2 and 3 are similar plots for resistors 2 and 3, respectively. What is the current in resistor 2? i (mA) (a) Numbe Unit T mA the tolerance is +/-2%

Explanation / Answer

slope of the graph gives resistance

R1 = Vs/Is = 18.9/(3.14*10^-3) = 6.02 Kohms

V2 = (2/3)*Vs = 12.6 v

R2 = V2/Is = 12.6/(3.14*10^3) = 4.01 k Ohms

V3 = Vs/3 = 6.3

R3 = 6.3/(3.14*10^-3) = 2 k ohms

R12 = (R1*R2)/(R1+R2) = (6.02*4.01)/(6.02+4.01) = 2.41 k ohms

R12 , R3 are in series

Req = R12 + R3 = 4.41 k ohms

I = E/Req = 8.9/4.41 = 2.02 mA

I2 = I*R12/R2 = 2.02*2.41/4.01 = 1.21 mA
