Question

Chapter 27, Problem 038 Your answer is partially correct. Try again. The figure shows a section or a circuit. The resistances are R1 = 2.3 , R2 4.4 , and R3 = 6.1 , and the indicated current is i = 6.6 A. The electric potential difference between points A and B that connect the section to the rest of the circuit is VA VB 77 V. (a) Is the device represented by "Box" absorbing or providing energy to the circuit, and (b) at what rate? R2 Box R1 Rg (a)T providing energy (b) Number the tolerance is +/-8% Unit

Explanation / Answer

R2 and R3 are in parallel

then

i*R3 = i1*(R2+Box)

6.6*6.1 = i1*(4.4+Box)

potentaial drop across R1 is 77-(i*R3) = 77-(6.6*6.1) = 36.75 V

Potential drop across R2 + Box is = 6.6*6.1 = 40.26 V

current through R1 is = 36.75/2.3 = 16 A

current through R2 + Box is i1 = 16-6.6 =9.4 A

potential drop across box is (6.6*6.1)-(i1*R2) = (6.6*6.1)-(9.4*4.4) = -1.1 V

so the box is providing energy

b) rate of proving energy is dE/dt = V*I

V = -1.1 V

I = 9.4

dE/dt = 1.1*9.4= 10.34 W
