Question
1- Suppose an inch of rain falls on Manhattan and you were able to collect all the water. Estimate the number of suburban swimming pools that the amount of water collected can fill.
Do and answer each of these steps:
A. Estimate the surface area of Manhattan, (in square miles then square feet). Use 5,000 feet is approximately one mile. Be careful about determining the number of square feet in a square mile.
B. Estimate the volume of water (say in cubic feet) that fell on Manhattan. To do the estimation, approximate that 1 inch of rain is about one-tenth of a foot. Draw a picture of the volume using the estimated length and width of Manhattan (or the surface area of Manhattan) and the height of one inch of water. Draw a picture.
C. Estimate the volume of an average pool (again in cubic feet by multiplying the pool length times its width times its depth). This gives the volume of water needed to fill an average suburban swimming pool.
D. From the answers to B and C above, divide the volume of water obtained in part B by the volume of a typical swimming pool as estimated in part C.
2- Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. The Earth is approximately 90 million miles away from the Sun and the recently demoted planet Pluto is approximately 3.7 billion miles away. Approximately how long does it take light to travel from the Sun to the Earth and how long does it take light to travel from the Sun to Pluto?
3- The definition of velocity is the change of distance divided by the change in time.
A jet plane when it takes off is moving at about 180 miles per hour.
The definition of acceleration is the change in velocity divided by the change in time.
A jet can accelerate from 0 to 180 miles per hour in 60 seconds. The acceleration is the change in velocity 3 miles per hour, each second.
Draw a picture of the clock in the jet and the simultaneous reading of the speedometer in the jet for 5 second intervals between 0 and 60 seconds.
Explanation / Answer
solution for 3
Time taken by light to travel from sun to earth = 90000000/186000 = 483.9 sec = 8.06 min
Time taken by light to travel from sun to pluto = 37000000000/186000 = 198924.7 sec = 3315.4 min = 55.25 h
