Question

You are standing on the ground and want to throw a 0.15 kg ball to your friend who is standing on a balcony 6.5 m above you.

a. What is the minimum initial velocity you must give the ball so that it will reach your friend 6.5 m above you.

b. if your friend throws the ball back down toward you with an initial velocity of 1m/s, what is the balls speed when you catch it.

Ignore air resistance. I dont believe this uses any constant linear motion equations, not sure. Not all the info given in problem is required to solve it.

Explanation / Answer

H = 6.5 m

v2 = u2 - 2gS

where g = acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/s2

=> the ball must can atleast have a velocity of 0 m/s at H = 6.5 m when thrown from below.

so, 0 = u2 - 2(9.8)(6.5)

=> u = 11.287 m/s

b] v2 = (1)2 + 2(9.8)(6.5)

=> v = 11.330 m/s.
