Question
Two toy cars are used to test both inelastic elastic collisions. One car has a mass m_1 = 1.0 kg, whereas and velocity car has a mass m_2 = 2.0 kg. The heavier car is initially at rest whereas the lighter car ha an initial v = 3.2 m/s indicated in the sketch below a) Determine the final of the system of both cars assuming they stick together after the collision with the help little magnet. b) Imagine another case that the mass m_1 bounces off elastically of mass m_2. Determine the velocity of each car after the collision. References: p = mv, K = 1/2 mv^2Explanation / Answer
m1 = 1 kg, m2 = 2kg, u1 = 3.2 m/s, u2 =0
a) from conservation of moemntum
m1u1 +m2u2 = (m1+m2)v
1*3.2 +0 = (1+2)v
v = 1.067 m/s
(b) rom conservation of moemntum
m1u1 +m2u2 = m1v1+m2v2
1*3.2 +0 = 1*v1 +2*v2 ....(1)
for elastic collision
v2 -v1 = u1 -u2
v2 - v1 = 3.2 ..(2)
from(1) and (2) we get
v1 = -1.067 m/s
v2 = 2.13 m/s
