Question

Assignment TER VERSION Chapter 06, Problem 26 GO Under the influence of its drive force, a snowmobile is moving at a constant velocity along a horizontal patch of snow. When the drive force is shut off, the snowmobile coasts to a halt. The snowmobile and its rider have a mass of 129 kg. Under the influence of a drive force of 250 N, it is moving at a constant velocity whose magnitude is 6.01 m/s. The drive force is then shut off. Find (a) the distance in which the snowmobile coasts to a halt and (b) the time required to do so. Explanation / Answer

When the snowmobile was moving the drive was balancing the opposing friction force .

Therefore , friction acting on the snowmobile . f = 250N

Decceleration caused due to friction ,a =- 250/129 = -1.93 m/s2

initial velocity , u = 6.01m/s

final velocity , v = 0

stopping distance, s

Using equations of motion,

v2 - u2 = 2as

- 6.012 = - 2*1.93*s

s = 9.35 m

v = u + at

0 = 6.01 - 1.93*t

time of stopping , t = 3.11 sec
