Question

Electrons in the lab are through potential difference that you control. What is the speed an electron that is released from rest and accelerated through a potential difference of 100 volts? Figure A has a capacitor with vertical plates G and H. Negatively charged plate G is so hot electrons are boiled off. (a) Electrons come out of the hole of plate H. What kind of charge is on plate H? (b) Indicate the direction of the electron beam coming out of the capacitor. (c) The uniform magnetic field points out of the paper as shown. Determine the direction of the magnetic force as the electrons leave the hole in plate H. (d) Draw the path an electron beam when the magnetic field is weak and can't provide enough of centripetal force. (e) The magnetic field produced by the coils (the same as those of the lab) is 35.0 mT. What current flows through the coils?

Explanation / Answer

a) Positive charge on plate H, H is made positve potential compared to G electron gun.

b) Direction of elctron coming out from Will follow circular path in the negative y direction (below positive axis).

c) Sinc F=BeV since B is out of paper, the magnetic force will be exactly in negative Y direction.

d) It will follow straight path in +ve x direction

e) Since B== (7.80 x 10-4) I so I =35*10-3/(7.80 x 10-4)= 44.8718 A
