Question

Chapter 21, Problem 016 In part a of the figure, particle 1 of charge q1 and partide 2 of charge q2 are fixed in place on an x axis 20.00 crn apart. Particle 3 of charge 93 +8.00 × 10 19 c 's to be placed on the line between particles 1 and 2 so that they produce a net electrostatic force on it. In part (b) of the figure below gives the x component of that force versus the coordinate x at which particle 3 is placed. The scale of the x axis is set by xs = 20.00 cm. What are (a) the sign of charge q1 and (b) the ratio q/4? x (cm) 8) the tolerance is +/-5%

Explanation / Answer

a)

At very close to the origin, as the force is directed in positive direction, so, the charge at origin must be positive

So, q1 is positive,

Similarly, when the charge is brought close to the charge q2, the net force is directed in the negative direction,

So, q2 has to be positive

At x = 5 cm, the net electric field = 0

So, k*q1/5^2 = k*q2/15^2

So, q1/q2 = 1/9

So, q2/q1 = 9 <---------- answer
