Question

Consider the following incorrect student statement about circuit IX from the tutorial, shown at right: When I apply Kirchhoff's loop rule when the switch is closed, the right loop has one battery and two bulbs in series. Thus the potential difference across the battery must equal the sum of potential differences across the bulbs, so each bulb will get half the potential difference of battery B, and the bulbs will be equally bright." 9b -A 9a Circuit IX Identify the flaw(s) in the student's reasoning. of Physics © Tutorials in Introductory Physics, Physics Education Group, Department rsity of Washington (Winter 2018, Mazur version

Explanation / Answer

The flaw in the statement is:

While applying Kirchoff's loop rule in right loop, the two bulbs are NOT in series, since they wll not carry same amount of current. There is a junction present at the top to another battery where current will also flow, therefore both bulbs are NOT in serie, therefore will not have equal potential difference, and therefore will not have same brightness
