The pieces fly apart parallel to the floor. As the plate falls, its momentum has only a vertical component, and no component paralle to the floor. After the collision, the component of the total momentum parallel to has no component parallel to the floor. Using the data shown in the drawing find (a) the mass of piece 1 and (b) the mass of plece 2 the floor must remain zero, since the net external force acting on the plate 179 ms 450 (a) Number Units (b) Number Version 4.24.5 MacBook Ai

Explanation / Answer

Solution:-

By using the conservation of momentum, we can write
Along the X-axis,
                         m1 v1 sin25 = m2 v2 cos45
                               1.268 m1 = 1.266 m2
                                         m2 = 1.001 m1                -----------------[1]
Along the Y axis,
                     m1 v1 cos25 + m2 v2 sin45 = m3 v3
                        2.719 m1 + 1.266 m2 = 3.991          ---------------[2]
Now putting the value of [1] in [2] then we get
                        2.492 m1 + 1.267 m1 = 3.991
                                           3.759 m1 = 3.991
                                                         m1 = 1.062 Kg
From [1]                                            m2 = 1.001*1.062 = 1.06 Kg
