Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units Value Units

Explanation / Answer

10)Given,

E = 3500 V/m ; B = 8.1 x 10^-3 T

We know that, the magnetic force balances the electric force and hence the beam moves undeflected:

Fm = Fe

q v B = q E

v = E/B

v = 3500/(8.1 x 10^-3) = 4.321 x 10^5 m/s

Hence, v = 4.321 x 10^5 m/s

we know that, when E = 0, the deflection occurs and the centripital force is provided by the magnetic force

m v^2/R = q v B

R = mv/qB = (9.1 x 10^-31 x 4.321 x 10^5)/(1.6 x 10^-19 x 8.1 x 10^-3) = 3.03 x 10^-4 m

Hence, R = 3.03 x 10^-4 m
