Question

To test your prediction you will need: 4 ceramic disk shaped "refrigerator" magnets .small compass · rod-shaped magnet Activity 1-5%: Magnetilc Disks Together and Apart Place the four disks in a stack and compare the behavior of the resulting magnet with that of the rod-shaped magnet. 1. Question 1-9: Does it behave like the unbroken rod-shaped magnet? Why or why not? Does it have North and South poles? stack apart into two stacks with two disks in each stack. Compare the resulting magnets with that of the rod-shaped 2. Pull the the behavior of one of magnet. Question 1-10: why not? Does it have North and South poles? Does it behave like the unbroken rod-shaped magnet? Why or 3. Pull the magnets apart completely. Compare the behavior of one of the resulting magnets with that of the rod-shaped magnet. Question 1-11: Does it behave like the unbroken rod-shaped magnet? Why or why not? Does it have North and South poles? Question 1-12: Do the poles of an individual disk magnet behave the same way when the disk is in the center of a stack? Explain! Question 1-13: What do you think would happen if you cut one of the indi- du l magnets in half along its axis? Do sit seem possible to split a magnet into with just a north pole and another with just a south pole? one

Explanation / Answer

kindly mention in future which questions you want an answer for so that the answers are as per your satisfaction. As I see some statements are mentioned as an activity and some as a question, so would be answering the questions here.

Questions 1-6:

Answer: compass needle is a magnetized iron piece (you can take an iron piece and rub on lodestone to get it magnetized) get a placed on a low friction pivot. The needle needs to have less mass(light in weight) so that magnetic field is able to overcome the frictional resistance)

Question 1-7, 1-8

A magnet has no specific coloration, but for our own reference some magnets have the north pole painted red to signify the positive end of the bar, and the south blue to signify the negative side.

You can verify this by placing the bar magnet on the pivot and letting the magnet align. The color aligning with the north pole is magnet north.

question activity 1-5

When you stack two identical permanent magnets, you get roughly the strength of one twice the size. However, a magnet twice the size has to spread its magnetic energy over twice the volume, so the surface strength of the magnet is rarely significantly increased. Smaller magnets that have the same rating typically have roughly the same surface strength as larger ones. What increases is the holding power, because they have larger surface area

1-9

The behavior of both is similar

1-10,11

The behavior is similar except the fact that strength is halved. One case could be where the disc diameter is much higher than thickness where the poles will be in the face
