Question

3. (10 points) Consider an electron with mass m and charge -e located a distance r from a fixed proton with mass M and charge +e. The electron is released from rest. Which one of the following expressions for the magnitude of the initial acceleration of the electron is correct? 2ke2 a) nMr a= 4, (15 points) Suppose we want to create a positive charge of 15.0 C on a block of Aluminum metal with mass 3.50 kg, what fraction of the electrons in the Aluminum block would we remove? ( 13, A-27, N-14 for Aluminum).

Explanation / Answer

The electrostatic force between the electron and proton can be calculated using Coulomb's law:

F(E) = k*q1*q2 / r^2

So, the force on the electron,

F = F(E) = ke*e*e / r2 =  ke*e2 / r2

Using Newton's 3rd law of motion on this force on electron,

F = m*a =   ke*e2 / r2

So, the acceleration, a = F/m = ke*e2 / m*r2.........................Option (b) is correct.
