Question
All inclined manometer is used to measure the pressure in a closed container. The ratio of the container diameter to tube diameter is 8. When air in the container is at atmospheric pressure, the free surface of the liquid (SG = 1.2) in the tube is at position 1. If the elevation angle (0) is 10 degree, determine the required absolute pressure in the container to move the liquid a distance (b) of 40 cm from position 1 to position 2. For the same pressure value from part a), determine the distance (b) of the liquid in the tube if the elevation angle is increased from 30 degree. Based on your result, what can you conclude about the sensitivity of inclined manometers as a function of elevation angle?Explanation / Answer
a)
b = 40 cm = 0.4 m
Theta = 10 deg
then vertical height h = b sin(theta) = 0.4*sin(10 deg) = 0.069 m
The gauge pressure due to this liquid at point 1,
p_1 = rho*g*h = 1200*9.81*0.069 = 812.268 N/m2
Absolute pressure in container = 101325 + 812.268 = 102137.268 Pa.
b) Now the inclination = 30 deg
so p_1 = rho*g*h = 1200*9.81*h = 812.268 Pa
h = 0.069 m
but h = b*sin(theta) = bsin(30 deg)
b = 0.069*2 = 13.8 cm
So we can see here as the inclination keep on increasing, to maintain a constant pressure in container, the height b will reduces.
