Question

Given the circuit shown below, the power supply is set to a voltage V=31.0 V, R2 = 25.1 ?, and R3 = 43.6 ?.

Suppose you place an ammeter into the circuit and find that the current through R2 is 0.432 A.

Answer the following questions:

1. What is the voltage across resistor R2? 10.8 V (correct)

2. What is the current through resistor R3? 0.249 A (correct)

3. What is the current flowing through R1?

4. What is the resistance of resistor R1?

How would I go about figuring out 3 and 4 with the information given? I appreciate any help!

Explanation / Answer

current through R2 = 0.432 A = I*R3/(R3 + R2)   {here I is current through R1}

I = 0.432*(25.1 + 43.6)/43.6 = 0.68 A {answer of 3}

voltage across R1 + voltage across R2 or voltage across R3 = total voltage

0.68*R1 + 10.8 = 31

R1 = (31 - 10.8)/0.68 = 29.7 ohm {answer of 4}
