The flow near a tornado is given by phi = K theta. If the speed of the wind is 30 mph at 200 m from the tornado center, what is the speed (in mph) at a point 20 m away from the center? If the pressure is 0.95 atm at 200 m away, what is the pressure at 20 m away from the tornado center? Will a 10m by 10m roof section (weighing 30,000 kg and not nailed down) lift off, if the pressure inside the house (located at 20 m from the tornado) is not equilibrated and is still at 0.95 atm?Explanation / Answer
a) The speed of the wind is directly proportional to the number of times the distance is reduced i.e as we go near the centre the speed increases
in this case the distance has been reduced 10 times so the speed of the wind is 300 mph
b) 1atm = 101.325 Kpa
0.95 atm = 96.25 Kpa
pressure will reduce as we nearer to the centre of the tornado and it got reduced by 10 times so the pressure gradiet is approx 0.07 and for this the distance has been reduced by 180 metres so total change in pressure will be approx 12.25 so 84 Kpa is the answer
c) yes it will lift because if there is a pressure gradient then the tornado will be created whcih will move up lifting the roof. it can only be stopped by equilizing pressure on both the side.
