Question

A uniform electric field with a magnitude of 1400 N/C points in the positive x direction as shown above. A positive charge of +5.1 ?C starts at point A, then moves to point B, then to point C and then back to point A.

1) What is the difference in electrical potential between points B and C? ?V=VC-VB = ____ V

2) How much work is done by the electric field when the charge moves from point B to point C? WA-B = ____ J

3) What is the difference in potential energy of the charge when it moves from point B to point C? ?U = UC - UB = _____ J

6cmm -8cm

Explanation / Answer

a)  Use this equation
E = -deltaV / deltaX
E = 1400N/C
for this one, X = 5.29cm, or rather 5.29*10^-2 meters.
so, with some algebra, you get -deltaV = 1400N/C * 5.29*10^-2 meters => 74.06 volts = -deltaV

b) since points A and B have the same X value, their potential energies are the same, so delta V = 0 for this one.

c) the magnitude of this deltaV will be the same as in part A, since points A and B have the same value for X.
