Part E please Physics and Chemistry Departmen Milwaukee School of Engineering 3/24/2017 Spring 2017 Test#1 PH 2021-71 Name Q3 Two point charges: Qh 3.0 nc is located x -4.0um and Q2 3.0 nc is located at at point x 1.0 pam and y -2.0 pm, as shown in the figure. (a) What is the electric dipole moment of this pair Qi -3.0 nC of charges (in unit vector notations i,j,k)? Qu- 3.0 n If this dipole is placed in a region ofspace at which the electric potential is given by: V(x, y) 60x +80y-40z b) Determine the electric fiel vector, E in unit vector notations i, j,i) c) What is the net force acting of the dipole? d) What is the torque on the dipole e) What is the potential energy of the dipole?Explanation / Answer
potential energy of dipole is
U = -p.E
But E = - dV/dx = -d(60x+80y-40z)/dx = -60 N/C
and p = 2qa where 2a is distance between two charges and q is magnitude of one of the charges
To find distance between charges use Pythagorous theorem
(2a)2 = (4)2 + (2)2 = 20
2a = 4.47 micrometer = 4.47*10-6 m
so, p = 4.47*10-6 m * 3*10-9 C =
So, p = 1.341*10-14 C.m
Now, Potential energy of dipole is
U = -p.E = -(1.341*10-14 C.m)(-60 N/C) = 8.046*10-13 J
In electron volt unit,
U = 8.046*10-13 J / 1.6*10-19 = 5.03*106 eV
