Question

measuring cylinder block of wood metro rule pivot 50cm mark 10cm mark. 80cm mark Fig 2.1 The student now places a weight of 0.39 N on top of the block of wood. She then starts to pour oil into the measuring cylinder. The rule balances again when there is 60 cm3 of oil in the measuring cylinder. The gravitational field strength g is 10 N/kg. (a) Calculate the weight of the oil in the cylinder ............[2] weight (iij the mass of the oil in the cylinder mass ..............................................................Iij (b) Calculate the density of the oil. density [2]

Explanation / Answer

sINCE THE RULER IS in equilibrium

Net torques acting on the ruler is zero

Torque due to weight placed on wood = Torque due to oil poured in cylinder

0.39*0.4 = 0.3*w_oil

w_oil = 0.39*0.4/0.3 = 0.52 N

1) So weight of the oil in cylinder is W_oil = 0.52 N

ii)

mass of oil in the cylinder is 0.52/10 = 0.052 Kg

iii) density of oil is d = mass / volume = 0.052/(60*10^-6) = 866.67 Kg/m^3
