Question
Two particle tracks have been detected during a nuclear reaction. It is known that both particles have the same speed, and a charge of the same magnitude. After the reaction both particles move along circular trajectories displayed in the figure below. The radius of the trajectory of the second particle is larger than that of the first particle. The external magnetic field is directed into the page. The arrows indicate the direction of particle's velocity. Please circle the statement that correctly describes the sign of the particle's charge and kinetic energy K. Please show the details of your solution! No credit will be given for unsubstantiated answer!Explanation / Answer
magnetic force = q ( v X B)
B -> -k (into the page)
v -> j (upward)
for 1:
F -> to the right (i)
i = q1 ( j x -k)
q1 = -ve
for 2:
F-> (-i)
q2 = +ve
and q v B = m v^2 / r
r = q B / m v
r is inversly propotional to the m.
so particle 1 is heavier.
and K = m v^2 /2
v is same for both hence K1 will be greater.
Ans: q1 is negative
q2 is positive
K1> K2
