Item 3
The three circuits below contain identical bulbs as well as ideal and identical batteries.
Part A
How does the brightness of bulb A compare to the brightness of bulb B?
Part B
How does the brightness of bulb B compare to the brightness of bulb C?
Part C
How does the brightness of bulb D compare to the brightness of bulb E?
Part D
How does the brightness of bulb A compare to the brightness of bulb D?
Part E
How does the brightness of bulb C compare to the brightness of bulb E?
Bulb A is brighter than bulb B. Bulb A is as bright as bulb B. Bulb A is dimmer than bulb B. D COEExplanation / Answer
(resistance of each bulb is R and voltage across battery is V)
for circuit 1:
I_A = V / R
for circuit 2:
(current will be same as connected in series)
I_B = I_C = V / (R + R) = V / 2 R
for circuit 3:
(potential diff across both bulb will be same as battery connected in parallel)
I_D = V/R
I_E = V / R
(A) through A is more current hence
bulb A is brighter than bulb B.
(B) B and C have same current through them.
Bulb B is as bright as bulb C.
(C) I_D = I_E
bulb D is as bright as bulb E.
(D) I_E > I_C
Bulb C is dimmer than bulb E.
