Question

The eye of an animal has only two types of cones. The response of the two cones is shown as a function of frequency in the figure. Six different frequency lights (1-6) are also shown. The following questions refer to this figure. a) Can this eye distinguish the difference in hue between frequency 1 & 3? Why? b) Can this eye distinguish the difference in hue between frequency 4 & 5? Why? c) What color would color 3 appear. Why? d) Give two color combinations (metamers) that appear the same color as color 3. Why? e) What would be the compliment to color 5? Why?

Explanation / Answer

1.) Answer: Yes , because the difference between the frequencies of 1 and 3 is considerably enough for eye to distinguish between them

2.) Answer: A hue refers to a pure color . NO, the eye will not be able to distinguish between the hue of 4 and 5 since they are the shades of the same colour .

3.) and 4.) Answer :3 would appear to be a mix of colour of the two intersecting frequencies of light ( probably red (left) and green (right) ). because it lies on the intersection of the frequency curves of the two colours.

5.) colour 5 would be blue or violet , since its frequency is highest among the visible colours.
