Question

There are 5 different major groups of animals - Porifiera (sponges), Cnidaria (medusa/hydra form such as jellyfish, hydra, and corals), Platyhelminthes (flatworms), Mollusks (Bivalves, Gastropods and Cephalopods), and Annalids (segmented worms). Explain how muscle tissue is used for selective advantage (i.e. how does muscle tissue help the animals survive and/or reproduce) in each of these groups excluding Porifera (which doesn't have muscle tissue). Muscle can be used to generate movement and/or force relative to the environment external to the animal, and it can also be used to generate movement and or force internal to the animal. Think about both of these possibilities as you formulate your answers.

Explanation / Answer

The following are the ways in which the muscle system/tissue help animals to survive or reproduce and use it to there advantage.

Cnidaria - The muscular system is not complex but it aids them for movement in water, increase or decrease in size and for hunting. In case of jelly fish the ring of muscle the encircle bottom of the bell contract squeezing water out and propelling fish to move ahead for a short distance. Sea anemones use their muscles for hunting. When they see a prey they move their tentacles to catch prey with help of cilia

Platyhelminthes - They have 3 types of muscles circular diagonal and longitudinal. They muscular system them for movement by twisting and turning and also helps them to contract and elongate. The muscular system is mainly used for locomotion . In case of some some Platyhelminthes the muscle help to attach to prey, suck food and exchange gas.

Mollusks - The muscular system helps for movement, suction and burrowing.

Annelids - They have circular muscle which helps in movement by forming a wave of contraction that forms throughout body and helps them to push ahead.
