NRF1 is a transcription factor that acts on nuclear genes encoding respiratory subunits and components of the mitochondrial transcription and replication machinery NRF1 transcription factor binds to 2 palindromic sites within the promoter of the eIF-2-alpha gene and is essential for eIF-2-alpha transcription. It is also involved in heme biosynthesis through regulation of globin gene expression. Majority of NRF 1 motif DNase 1 footprints coincided with the NRF 1 occupancy identified by chIP sequence.This indicates that there is a strong correlation betweenfootprints and chIP sequence Positive correlations exist between footprint occupancy and nucleotide-level evolutionary conservation patterns for NRF1 motif. This indicates that there is a strong evolutionary selection on transcription factor occupancy.
