Question
Two loudspeakers emit sound waves along the x-axis. The sound has maximum intensity when the speakers are 15 cmapart. The sound intensity decreases as the distance between the speakers is increased, reaching zero at a separation of 54 cm .
Part A
What is the wavelength of the sound?
Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
Part B
If the distance between the speakers continues to increase, at what separation will the sound intensity again be a maximum?
Express your answer with the appropriate units.
Explanation / Answer
a)What is given is
(i) separation of 15cm between the speakers leads to maximum intensity on the x axis,
(ii) Separation of 54 cm leads to zero to zero intensity ,
so,the waves are in phase at x1 = 15cm
and out of phase when x2 = 54 cm
thus
x2 -x1 = /2
= 2( x2 -x1) = 2 ( 54cm- 15cm) = 78 cm
b)for getting the maximum intensity ,separation should increase by one complete wavelength than at the previous point of maximum intensity so
maximum intensity is at x=78+15=93 cm
