Question

Two loudspeakers are at opposite ends of a railorad car as itmoves past a stationary observer at 10.0 m/s. If the speakers haveidentical sound frequencies of 212 Hz, what is the beat frequencyheard by the observer when (a) he listens from the position A, infront of the car, (b) his is between the speakers, at B, and (c) hehears the speakers after thay have passed him at C? explaing what a beat frequency is would be reallyhelpful Two loudspeakers are at opposite ends of a railorad car as itmoves past a stationary observer at 10.0 m/s. Explanation / Answer

(a) when observer is at point A, the sounds emitting from speakershave same frequency i.e., same Doppler effect, so that beatfrequency is zero. (b) When the observer is at B :       one source is moving towards him.According to the Doppler effect, we have:                f' = f/(1 - vs/v) = 212/(1 - 10/343) = 218Hz       and another is moving away fromhim                  f' = f(1 + vs/v) = 212/(1 + 10/343) = 206Hz Therefore, the beat frequency is: fbeat = 218 - 206 = 12Hz (c) When the stationary observer is at point C, Accordingto Doppler effect, the beat frequency iszero.
