Question
A position-time graph for a particle moving along the x axis is shown in Figure P2.5. The divisions along the horizontal axis represent 1.75 s and the divisions along the vertical axis represent 2.0 m. http://www.webassign.net/serpop/p2-5alt.gif
(a) Find the average velocity in the time interval t = 6.00 s to t = 16.00 s. m/s
(b) Determine the instantaneous velocity at t = 8.00 s (where the tangent line touches the curve) by measuring the slope of the tangent line shown in the graph. m/s
(c) At what value of t is the velocity zero? s
Explanation / Answer
1. 6sec -> 6/1.75 = 3.4 units
at this time, x = 7 units = 7 x 2 = 14 m
at 16sec -> 16/1.75 = 9.1 units
at this time, x = 2 units = 4 m
average velocity = ( x16 - x6) / (16 - 6)
= 4 - 14 / 10
= - 1 m/s
(B) at t = 8sec
velocity = slope = - 13 vertical units / 7 horizontal units
= (-13 x 2) / (7 x 1.75)
= 2.12 m/s
(C) velocity is zero where slope of x vs t curve is zero.
t = 8 units = 8 x 1.75 = 14 sec
