Question

Consult Concept Simulation 7.1 at www.wiley.com/college/cutnell in preparation for thisproblem. Two friends, Al and Jo, have a combined mass of 168 kg. Atan ice skating rink they stand close together on skates, at restand facing each other, with a compressed spring between them. Thespring is kept from pushing them apart because they are holdingeach other. When they release their arms, Al moves off in onedirection at a speed of 0.77 m/s,while Jo moves off in the opposite direction at a speed of1.5 m/s. Assuming that friction isnegligible, find Al's mass.
1 kg

Explanation / Answer

Mass of Al = M Mass of Jo = m Speed of Al = V = 0.77 m/s Speed of Jo = v = 1.5 m/s Given that M + m = 168 kg ==> m = 168 - M According to conservation of momentum we have            M V= mv            M V =( 168 - M) v            M ( V+ v) = 168 v    ==> M = 168 v / ( V + v)                = 168 * 1.5 / ( 0.77 + 1.5) = 111.01 kg
