Question
The drawing shows a straight wire carrying a currentI. Above the wire is a rectangular loop that contains aresistor R. If the current I is decreasing intime, what is the direction of the induced current through theresistor R-left-to-right or right-to-left? The drawing shows a straight wire carrying a currentI. Above the wire is a rectangular loop that contains aresistor R. If the current I is decreasing intime, what is the direction of the induced current through theresistor R-left-to-right or right-to-left?Explanation / Answer
Using the right hand screw rule, the direction of magneticfield at the loop is normally inwards. As the current is decreasingthe magnetic flux linked with the loop will also decrease.Accrding to Lenz's law, direction of induced current must be suchthat it opposes the decrease in magnetic flux, i.e. the directionof magnetic field must be inwards and normal to the plane ofscreen. This requires that the facing side of loop behaves like Spole of magnet. Hence the direction of induced current will beclockwise or the current must flow from left to right inresistance.
