Question

A block of unknown mass is attached to a spring with a springconstant of 5.00 N/m and undergoes simpleharmonic motion with an amplitude of 11.0cm. When the block is halfway between its equilibrium position andthe end point, its speed is measured to be 28.0 cm/s. (a) Calculate the mass of the block.
____________ kg
(b) Calculate the period of the motion.
____________ s
(c) Calculate the maximum acceleration of the block. ____________ m/s2 (a) Calculate the mass of the block.
____________ kg
(b) Calculate the period of the motion.
____________ s
(c) Calculate the maximum acceleration of the block. ____________ m/s2

Explanation / Answer

spring constant k = 5.00 N/m

amplitude A= 11.0 cm= 0.11 m

speed of the block When the block is halfway between itsequilibrium position and the end point is

                     v = 28.0 cm/s= 0.28 m / s

we know   v = w [ A ^ 2- x ^ 2]

                   = 0.866 Aw

From this angular speed w = v / 0.866 A

                                            = 2.939 rad / s
