Question

A 2.00 meter tall sophmore, is frustrated with his girlfriend. He releases his tensions by bombarding the adjacent dorm, where his g.f lives, with water balloons. He is trying to hit his g.f's window: 1 meter tall window's bottom is 4 meters above ground level. He wants the water balloon to hit the dorm window between 4-5 meters high. He is trying to hide behind some bushes, so he is lying on the ground and firing water balloons between the bushes. He fires one water balloon at 60 degrees above horizontal with a speed of 15.0 m/s. (Neglect air resistance and assume the balloon is shot at ground level). The dorm is 17.0 meters away....

A) Does he hit his g.f's windowm? (you need to find how far up the building the balloon hits the building)

**THis is the worst problem I have ever seen, haha. I'm sorry if this is confusing.

Explanation / Answer

First you can split the problem into x and y,
he launches the balloons with velocities v0x and v0y which is given by v0x = vcos and v0y = vsin

There is no horizontal acceleration, and there is -g vertical accerlation

First find how long it takes for the balloon to travel 17.0m x = x0 + voxt + 1/2axt2 ; x = 0 + vcost + 0 ; t = x / (vcos) ; t = 17.0m / (15.0m/s cos 600) = 2.27s

Next find out where the water balloon will be vertically in 2.27s

y = y0 + voyt + 1/2ayt2 ; y = 0 + vsint + 1/2(-g)t2 ; y = vsint - 1/2gt2 ; y = 15.0m/s sin60 (2.27s) - 0.5 (9.8m/s^2)(2.27)^2 ; y = 4.27m

So yes, he does hit the window of his girlfriend's dorm room.
