One concept that word increase 3I engine efficiency is easily in-take valve closing (EIVC) where we in take valve closes before the piston reaches BC on the intake stroke, thus limiting the amount of charge inducted in to the cylinder. Explain why EIVC improves engine efficiency at part 10 ad. This part load reduction in change could be achieved by using late intake valve closing where the intake valve is not closed until the compression stroke has pushed some of the cylinder gases back out into the intake manifold. Based on a comparison of p-v diagrams, is this method in perior to EIVC?

Explanation / Answer

a) As the intake valve is closed sooner, the pressure in the intake manifold has to increase to compensate for the reduction in volume in order to maintain constant mass. This higher pressure results in better cycle efficiency.

b) Yes this method is inferior to the EIVC because some of the cylinder gases are pushed back into the intake manifold thus resulting in a potential loss of charge which could have been converted to power.
