Question
What best represents fasting conditions?
For 1,2 and 3 pick the option that would fit best when the body is fasting in terms of biochemistry.
1. Fate of glycerol 2. Modification of acetyl-CoA carboxylase 3. Ketone body production [ Select ] ["glycolysis", "gluconeogenesis"] [ Select ] ["dephosphorylated", "phosphorylated"] [ Select ] ["yes", "no"]Explanation / Answer
1. Answer for first part is GLUCONEOGENESIS. As glucose and fats are the energy sources for the body, during regular times, they are broken down to produce energy.
But during fasting, as glucose is not absorbed by the body, foemation of glycogemn occurs from stored fats and amino acids by the process of Gluconeogenesis, in order to meet the energy requirement of the body.
2. Acetyl C0A Carboxylase remains in dephosphorylated state, because in the fasting, so as to decrease the production of pyruvate, because glucose absorption is not taking place. This inturn inhibits the production of fatty acids as well.
3. Ketone body Production : yes . Since stored triglycerides is broken into glycerol and fatty acids, for gluconeogenesis, ketone bodies are produced from the fatty acids because they are capable of crossing blood- brain barrier. So for the use by brain, ketone bodies are produced in the fasting duration.
