Question
An archer lines up an arrow on the horizontal exactly dead center on a target. She releases the arrow and it strikes the target a distance h = 7.5 cm below the center. If the target is 9 m from the archer
(a) how long was the arrow in the air before striking the target.
(b) What was the initial velocity of the arrow as it left the bow? Report your answers in meters per second, feet per second and miles per hour. Neglect air resistance.
In meters per second?
In feet per second?
In miles per hour?
Explanation / Answer
a] By using second law of motion,
h = 0.5gt^2
t = sqrt(2h/g)
= sqrt(2*0.075/9.8)
= 0.12 s answer
b] We know that,
distance = velocity * time
velocity = distance/time
= 9/0.12
= 75 m/s
In meters per second = 75 m/s
In feet per second = 3.28*75 = 246 ft/s
In miles per hour = 2.23*75 = 167.25 miles/h
