Question

Part A A rectangular 10.0 cm by 18.0 cm circuit carrying an 8.00 A current is oriented with its plane parallel to a uniform 0.790 T magnetic field (Figure 1) Find the magnitude of the magnetic force on the ab segment of this circuit. Express your answer in newtons to two significant figures. ab Submit My Answers Give Up Part B Find the magnitude of the magnetic force on the bc segment of this circuit. Express your answer in newtons to two significant figures. Figure 1 bc Submit My Answers Give Up Part C Find the magnitude of the magnetic force on the cd segment of this circuit. Express your answer in newtons to two significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

From the figure

ab = cd = 10 cm = 0.1 m

bc = ad = 18 cm = 0.18 m

the force on a current carrying wire placed in an external magnetic field is

F = B * I * L * sin(theta)

theta is the angle between L and B

To find the direction we use right hand thumb rule

part A)

I = 8 A

L = ab = 0.1 m

B = 0.79 A

theta = 270 deg

F = 0.79 * 8 * 0.1 * sin(270)

Fab = - 0.632 N

part B)

here theta = 0 so sin(theta) = 0

hence Fbc = 0

part C)

I = 8 A

L = cd = 0.1 m

B = 0.79 A

theta = 90 deg

F = 0.79 * 8 * 0.1 * sin(90)

Fcd = 0.632 N

part D)

here theta = 0 so sin(theta) = 0

hence Fda = 0

part E)

the direction is into the page

part F)

here F = 0

part G)

the direction is out of the page

part H)

F = 0

part I)

The net force is F = Fab + Fbc + Fcd + Fda

F = -0.632 + 0 + 0.632 + 0

F = 0 N
